What Is a VPN and How Does It Work?

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a service that creates an encrypted connection between your device and the internet. Instead of your traffic flowing directly to the websites and apps you use, it travels first through a secure tunnel to a VPN server. From there it continues to its destination. The result is that your real IP address is hidden and your data is scrambled so that nobody between you and the VPN server — including your internet provider or the owner of a public Wi-Fi network — can read what you are doing.

The two jobs a VPN does

A VPN really does two distinct things. First, it encrypts your traffic. Encryption turns readable data into ciphertext that is useless to anyone who intercepts it without the key. This is what keeps you safe on untrusted networks like hotel or airport Wi-Fi. Second, it masks your IP address. The websites you visit see the VPN server's address instead of yours, which makes it much harder to tie your browsing back to your real location or identity.

How the tunnel is built

When you connect, the VPN app negotiates a secure tunnel using a protocol such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, or IKEv2. The protocol handles the handshake, agrees on encryption keys, and keeps the connection alive as you move between networks. When you actually need a VPN

Not every situation calls for a VPN, but several common ones do. Use one whenever you connect to public Wi-Fi, when you want to keep your browsing private from your internet provider, when you travel and need to reach services from home, or when you simply value not having every click logged and sold. A VPN is not a magic cloak of invisibility — it does not stop you from logging into accounts that already know who you are — but it removes a large layer of casual tracking and snooping.

What a VPN cannot do

It is just as important to understand the limits. A VPN will not protect you from malware you download yourself, from phishing emails that trick you into typing your password, or from giving away personal details on social media. For those threats you need good habits, two-factor authentication, and a healthy dose of skepticism. Think of a VPN as one strong layer in a larger privacy strategy, not the whole wall.
