How to Secure Public Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi in cafes, hotels, and airports is one of life's small pleasures and one of its quiet risks. Because anyone can join these networks, anyone on them can potentially watch unprotected traffic or impersonate the network itself. The good news is that a handful of simple habits make public Wi-Fi perfectly usable.
1. Always use a VPN
This is the single most effective step. A VPN encrypts everything you send, so even if someone is capturing traffic on the network, your data is unreadable. Enable auto-connect so the tunnel turns on the instant you join an untrusted network.
2. Verify the network name
Attackers often create hotspots named like the real venue — "Airport_Free_WiFi" next to "Airport Free WiFi". Ask staff for the exact name before connecting, and be suspicious of open networks that ask for unusual personal details.
3. Check for HTTPS
Make sure sites show the padlock and load over HTTPS before you enter anything. While a VPN already protects you, HTTPS adds end-to-end encryption to the site itself. Never type passwords on a plain HTTP page.
4. Turn off auto-connect and sharing
Disable automatic joining of open networks so your device does not silently latch onto a malicious hotspot. Turn off file sharing and AirDrop-style features while on public networks so nothing on your device is exposed.
5. Keep two-factor authentication on
Even if a password somehow leaks, two-factor authentication stops an attacker from logging in. Use an authenticator app rather than SMS where possible, and keep backup codes stored safely offline.
6. Forget the network when you leave
After you are done, tell your device to forget the network so it does not reconnect automatically next time you are nearby. This prevents your phone from broadcasting that it trusts that name.
7. Save the sensitive stuff for trusted networks
When you can, leave banking, tax, or medical logins for your home or mobile connection. A VPN makes public Wi-Fi safe for most tasks, but minimising exposure for the most sensitive ones is simply prudent.
